Watch Your Steps

As I dragged my body through the first floor; I stepped on the mangled vocal chords. A female voice wearing a human veil began to speak. Her male companion sat akimbo, trying to read the engravings on her cheek. The poker face of loneliness smiled. He knew I had the winning cards — he was there when I lost the table.
